Halloween

Seeing as how Thanksgiving is right around the corner I thought it would be a good idea to finally get the post for Stella's Halloween completed.

Stella being the diva that she is had two costumes for Halloween. Her first costume was the one that she wore to Belinda's work on the Friday before Halloween. I still don't remember how the idea originated, but about a month after Stella was born we had decided that Stella was going to be a penguin for the occasion. Why a penguin? Again, I am sure we said it in passing and it stuck. So Belinda surfed the web for a penguin and finally found one that she liked. As previously mentioned, Stella, who refuses to wear the same thing twice dare not wear the costume again for trick or treating so her godparents bought her a second costume as a ballerina.

Here is Stella holding the tutu in one hand and wearing the penguin hat at the same time. Decisions, decisions.

So about Friday. Stella was all dressed up and taken to work by Grandma where she partook in the festivities. Eager to get a hold of candy I am told she was in exceptionally good mood. Not that she has had candy, that we know of, or that she likes the sugar, so we think, but she liked the candy for the rattling of the wrapper.

In order to get the hat on her so that costume would be clear grandma distracted Stella while Belinda swiftly put the cap on. As you can tell, it made things a little hard to see, but seeing as how she is always being carried, who needs to see right in front of you anyway.

Stella who has been particularly uneasy going with strangers was quite fond of Belinda's boss- not that having a bowl of candy didn't help. None the less he was ever so gracious to clear the beak to show her face for a photo or two.

Once Stella was done going from office to office she went back to Belinda's office to hang out and be distracted. Her favorite activity was taking out each and every candy from the bowl and throwing them onto the floor. This unfortunately is her favorite thing to do right now. Take whatever is in a container and pour it out, sometimes flinging the thing. I pray that she will one day revert her trend and learn to put everything back into the container.

These are the candies Belinda bought to pass out. It should be noted that these are all her personal favorites.

On Halloween day we had a great time hanging out. Unlike my previous neighborhood the neighborhood we live in now really gets into the day. Three houses had haunted houses in their garages. Most of people passing out candy were sitting in the front yard just waiting for people to come up and say, "Trick or Treat!" Trying to keep up with the Jones we did the same. Although she was mainly present for the occasion, I will say that this is the pumpkin that Stella and I carved.

Given that we planned on taking Stella around trick or treating we bought Stella a new ride to push her around in. While we were in Chicago she had greatly enjoyed her cousin's little car so we thought it would be easier for her to go around the neighborhood with her in that rather than carrying her.

What's that you ask? Yes, yes you are correct. We do have a stroller that we have had for some time that we are very proud of. And no. No, Stella does not like to hang out in it. Moving on! Here she is in the new ride.

So the prima ballerina and her folks went walking around the hood hitting up people for candy. I would say it was after about two houses that Stella wanted out of the car. Yeah, two houses. From that point on she wanted to be carried. I'm sure most of it had to do with the man dressed like Jason that got her spooked.

So Belinda carried her first. I would stay behind at the sidewalk and see Belinda go up to the door and say, "trick or treat!" (Only, the way it was said, it really was not worthy and exclamation point.) Stella would hold open her bag and the people would ask, "Oh what kind of candy does she like?" So oh course Belinda would say "chocolate" for her dad and "starburst" for her mom.

One of the houses was more honest about the situation and just asked, "What kind of candy do her parents like,"

After a few blocks with mom, Stella then came with dad. Not being as energetic as the other fathers who were around us dressed in full costumes I took a different approach. I figured this would be a good time to teach Stella that honesty was the best policy.

Belinda was the brains of the operation in that she would try and find a group of children around us so it looked like we were with those people but when we would lose them that's where I tried honesty.

I would simply walk up to the door. And as politely as possible say, "Hi, how are you? We are taking our daughter around for her first Halloween and exploiting her so that we can get some candy. (pause) Thanks for the treats. Have a great day." Probably not what they were expecting, but why try and hide it.

It was a good time and I think Stella enjoyed seeing all the kids run around. I can also say that most of the neighbors in our hood give out some good candy.

Once we were done we made it back home and sat in our driveway and continued to pass out candy to the other children. Next year the plan is to dress up as a family and go around the neighborhood. If I can, I might add another haunted house to the block so I can take a try at scaring some kids.

One house had a great idea and made their backyard into a haunted graveyard. Very poltergeist.

Either way. Stella, your not getting a new ride to be pushed around in. Your going to work off the sugar by walking.

Yeah, right. I know she is going to have us wrapped around her little finger and probably get some other contraption to push her around in.
