A few days before Mother's Day I waited for an opportunity for Belinda to be in another room so I could ask Mrs. Chapa what she thought Belinda would like as a gift. We had just gotten home from work and I was in the kitchen and Belinda was in the baby's room.
So using my soft voice I called Mrs. Chapa a little closer to see what she thought. Once she got to where we could whisper I asked her, "has Belinda told you anything in particular that she wants for Mother's day?"
Mrs. Chapa told me that Belinda had mentioned she would like a purse or a spa day. I was half excited cause I didn't have to guess what to buy her and the other hand was knowing that the spa and purse she wanted were not going to be cheap.
Our conversation could not have lasted more than three minutes when we hear a shout from the baby's room,
"I WANT A SPA DAY!"
On the official day we had a BBQ here at the house. We had family come over for some surf and turf. The steaks were good. The surf, not so much. Afraid that I would get anyone sick by having under cooked shrimp I grilled those suckers up. They were nice and chewy.
For the record Stella, your mom tried to take the fifty cents from your piggy bank and told me that you had asked her to ask me to buy her something with the fifty cents. I told her that you contributed that amount to the joint gift certificate that you and I bought her.
And I think you should know something else Stellita about your mom. You see by the time I wrote this post mother's day had already come and gone. But something happened last week that I thought you would like to hear about when you got older. We had a crazy rain storm. It came out of no where. The sky got black and the wind shot up to high speeds. Just like that the electricity had gone out. We found all our candles and flash lights and I got us a radio to listen to and hear what was happening. While we collected all these things your grandma and I were talking about how dependant we were on electricity now a days. Your mom was with us for a while but then she got up and said, "I'm going to go check on Stellita."
She was worried about you being without your white noise and night light and if you would get hot all swaddled up without the air conditioner working. So once she left I kept talking to your grandma about her job back in corpus where she would have to stay behind in the event a hurricane ever hit the city. We talked and talked and realized your mom had not come back. So I went to go check on her. I went to our bedroom assuming she had fallen asleep in our bed. But she was not there. If she's not in our bed then she must be sitting in the rocking chair watching you sleep.
Wrong again. She had taken a flash light and gone into your room and fallen asleep at the foot of your crib. I found her curled up without her pillow or blanket just laying on the floor sleeping with you. I could not help but smile and think what a wonderful mom she was. She worries enough about you for the both of us.
Here are the two of many photos we tried taking on Mother's Day that you again did not want to smile for. Maybe next Mother's Day you will smile for the photo.
