The Comfort of Strangers

It has been seven days since we took up residence here at the hospital. We have been moved to four different rooms, slept in waiting rooms (okay, just me), and I have sufficiently explored every hallway of this hospital to get out of this ten foot by ten foot room. Through all these things we have been repeatedly comforted by strangers.

Perhaps it's because the nurses are mothers themselves, but they sure do empathise with our situation. Whenever they were attending to us or the baby they would always come into the room and look at Belinda and say, "Hi Mom. How are you today?" Their words always carried an understanding that here was this woman-first time mom-who carried this child for nine months, gave birth to her, and then had to leave the baby behind unable to take her home. They went above and beyond helping us out. They put us in rooms even though we were not suppose to be. They gave us items to help make our stay more comfortable. They called doctors and administration trying to get us an overnight room so we would not be forced to leave at night. They were true to the calling of a nurse.

So one morning we decided to bring breakfast. We figured everyone loves food, especially when its free. So we woke up a little earlier than usual and Belinda knew of a place that sold Kolache and doughnuts. After I dropped Belinda off I walked in there and asked them for two dozen of their finest Kolaches. There was a little bit of that Christmas spirit left in me that had me excited about the nurses appreciation when I walked in with our attempt to repay them for all they had done. I got back to the hospital, walked the long halls to get to the nursery. Said hello to everyone along the way and smiled as I rode the elevator. When you get to the nursery you have to ring a bell so that you can get pass two solid doors that help secure the babies. I get buzzed in, make it to the desk of nurses and wouldn't you know it not ONE of the nurses who had been helping us was working today. In fact, this whole new batch had spoken with Belinda and been somewhat abrupt with her. They explained that the other nurses were acting out of bounds.

I was about to pull up a table and eat everyone of those kolache myself before handing them over to these woman from the land of Crocs. After seeing Stella smile like an angle and clearly not wanting to re-enact the scene from Stand by me I decided to give the nurses our gift and hope word would make it back to the other nurses. I walked back to the nurses station and one of the nurses in a snippy tone said, "may I help you?"

I said yes, "we were so appreciative of everyones help these last few days we wanted to get y'all breakfast." Her look of surprise was followed by, "how sweet of you." Wouldn't you know it, thirty minutes later they were helping us out again and we were placed in a temporary room.

Unlike the first set of nurses, who didn't require food to act, these nurses were just as kind. All the nurses at the hospital have been a tremendous support. Though I would like to tell them about my public display of gratitude and send them to read this that would mean they would discover my prior attempts of going shopping in their stockroom.

Thank you Nurse __________ .
